Do realize, many board vendors sell defective parts.Įxpect turnaround time to be longer with this option: the first board you receive will often be faulty. On newer machines, where boards go for over $1000, this is not a viable option.
On older machines, the time & kill necessary to track down the problem may not be worth it, when the cost of the entire board is $80.
If you choose to replace the board, you’ll be paying for the whole thing even if only one component is causing the problem.

If you have the time to hunt down a board & figure out how to install it, and the board is reasonably priced for your year/model, this is a viable option. However, as Apple couldn't extend the courtesy of notifying me of the initial recall of my logic board, saving me $500, I'm strongly reconsidering that purchase. I'd been considering buying the new 2016 15" MacBook Pro when it comes out later this year & using my old one as a backup. The authorized dealer said that because my machine is now considered "vintage", Apple no longer has the part, #661-5566 or #661-6360 MLB in stock & my current logic board would have to be sent to Florida from Arizona to be "refurbished" & then reinstalled. Nice, since I didn't receive anything from Apple about any recall & it wasn't giving me problems until now, apparently I'm now screwed. However, this recall went out of date a couple years ago.
They also informed me that there had been a "recall" on this item to have it replaced for free. I recently took my Mid-2010 "15, 2.4GB MacBook Pro into an Apple Authorized dealer & found the logic board is the problem. So I apologize in advance for any missteps. Excuse me if I'm doing this wrong, as this is the first time I've ever used anything like this, other than looking up things.
